Central heat pump guide

What to know before installing a central heat pump

What is a central heat pump?

A central heat pump has an outdoor unit and an indoor coil connected to your ductwork, either on an existing furnace or on an air handler. Heated or cooled air is distributed to every room through the existing vents, and a single thermostat controls the whole house.

As the Ouellet Flexx spec sheet puts it, one unit is enough to heat or cool the home. It’s the most discreet solution: no wall units in the rooms, just the usual vents. It suits single-family homes, semi-detached houses and large units that already have ductwork.

Central heat pump prices: what drives the cost

There’s no single price for a central heat pump: two houses of the same size can need very different work. Rather than show a misleading number, here are the scenarios we see most often, from least to most expensive.

ScenarioTypical workRelative range
Replacing an existing central heat pumpNew outdoor unit and coil, connections, commissioning; ductwork in good conditionMost affordable
Adding a heat pump to an existing furnaceCoil installed on the furnace, outdoor unit, refrigerant lines, electrical workMid-range
Full replacement: heat pump + furnace or air handlerSafe removal of the old equipment, new indoor unit, coordination with a sheet-metal workerHigher
House without ductsNew ductwork, or a ductless multi-zone alternativeHighest — multi-zone often makes more sense

Other factors that affect the price: the capacity required (24,000 to 60,000 BTU depending on the house), your electrical panel capacity, the distance between the indoor and outdoor units, access to the basement or attic, and removal of the old unit. The rebate you qualify for then lowers the bill.

For comparison, wall-mounted heat pump replacement starts at $2,690 + tax, with a 10-year warranty included. A central heat pump is a bigger investment, but it treats the whole house at once. To get your price, answer a few questions: reply within 24 hours.

Central or wall-mounted heat pump: the comparison

This question comes up at almost every visit. Both technologies are efficient; what sets them apart is how the air is distributed and the work involved.

Rebates for a central heat pump

Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program helps homeowners pay for the purchase and installation of an eligible heat pump. The amount depends in particular on the certified heating capacity of the installed unit and on the rules in effect when you apply; conditions apply to the installation and the documents to provide.

A central heat pump usually has a higher heating capacity than a single wall unit, so it pays to document the project properly. We check your eligibility, choose a compliant match-up and prepare the supporting documents. All the details are on our 2026 heat pump rebates page.

How the installation works

  1. Assessment visit: ductwork condition, furnace or air handler, electrical panel, outdoor unit location.
  2. Sizing: choosing the right capacity for the house, to avoid a unit that’s too small or too large.
  3. Installation: outdoor unit on a pad, coil, insulated refrigerant lines, drainage and electrical hook-up; coordination with a sheet-metal worker if the ducts need changes.
  4. Commissioning: testing, thermostat settings and a walkthrough on use and maintenance.
  5. Rebate: we hand over the documents needed for your application.

Two recent examples: replacing a central air conditioner with a high-efficiency heat pump in Town of Mount Royal, and a full heat pump and furnace replacement in Blainville, done turnkey including removal of the old unit. Once installed, plan an annual maintenance visit to keep it efficient.

Frequently asked questions

Central heat pumps: your questions

How much does an installed central heat pump cost in Montréal?

The price mainly depends on the equipment already in place: replacing an existing central heat pump on ducts in good condition is the most affordable scenario, while a full replacement with a furnace or air handler costs more. Capacity, the electrical panel and access also matter. After a few questions, you get your installed price within 24 hours.

Can I keep my furnace with a central heat pump?

Yes, in many cases. The heat pump is installed with a coil on the existing furnace: it handles heating and cooling most of the year, and the furnace takes over during the coldest days. We check your furnace’s condition and compatibility during the visit.

Does a central heat pump heat at −30 °C?

According to the manufacturers, our Ouellet Flexx and Stelpro Slim B models keep heating down to −30 °C. As with any heat pump, output drops in deep cold, so backup heat (a furnace or electric elements) usually stays in place.

Is my ductwork compatible with a heat pump?

Most systems designed for a forced-air furnace or central air conditioner work, but their size and condition need to be checked. During the visit, we assess the ducts and, if needed, coordinate changes with a sheet-metal worker.

What warranty comes with a central heat pump?

Our Ouellet Flexx and Stelpro Slim B central models are covered for 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 10 years on labour. Installation is done by a certified technician with valid RBQ licences and insurance.
