Multi-zone heat pumps in Montréal
A multi-zone heat pump connects a single outdoor unit to several indoor units — up to 5 with the Gree Free Match M and up to 6 with the Stelpro Multi B — so each room has its own setting. HVAC MTL installs them in Montréal, Laval and on the South Shore, with 18,000 to 55,000 BTU models that heat down to −30 °C.

Multi-zone guide
Multi-zone, explained simply
How does a multi-zone heat pump work?
A multi-zone heat pump works like a wall-mounted one, but its outdoor unit feeds several indoor units, each installed in a room or zone. Each unit has its own remote or WiFi control: you can keep the bedroom cooler than the living room, or heat the basement only when you use it.
The result: even comfort throughout the house, a single outdoor unit (less clutter on the façade, balcony or roof) and energy use that matches how each room is actually used.
Multi-zone or several wall-mounted heat pumps?
| Criterion | Multi-zone heat pump | Several separate wall units |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor units | Just one | One per indoor unit |
| Outdoor footprint | Minimal: ideal for a plex, a balcony or a narrow yard | More space needed |
| Room-by-room control | Yes, each zone independent | Yes |
| If the outdoor unit fails | All zones are affected | Only that zone |
| Capacities offered | 18,000 to 55,000 BTU total | 9,000 to 36,000 BTU per unit |
Multi-zone makes sense as soon as two or more rooms need to be served and outdoor space is limited. For a single open area, a wall-mounted heat pump remains the simplest solution. If the house has ductwork, a central heat pump is also worth considering.

Our multi-zone projects, from Saint-Henri to Mascouche
- Saint-Henri: an outdated Fujitsu multi-zone replaced with a 24,000 BTU Gree multi-zone with two indoor units.
- Montréal-Est: several wall units, each dedicated to one zone, and a single outdoor unit placed for easy maintenance and less noise.
- Greenfield Park: a house with no air conditioning or heat pump, fitted with a −30 °C Gree multi-zone system in a 4-zone setup.
- Mascouche: a 6-year-old, out-of-warranty heat pump (failed compressor and circuit board) replaced with a multi-zone system: a 9,000 BTU head in the basement and a 12,000 BTU head on the ground floor.
- Ville-Marie: a 27,000 BTU Stelpro multi-zone with two 12,000 BTU wall units, an aluminum pad and line covers.
Sizing a multi-zone system properly
Sizing a multi-zone system isn’t just adding up BTUs: each head must suit its room, then the outdoor unit must be able to feed them all, within the line lengths allowed by the manufacturer. Where the outdoor unit goes (snow, noise, maintenance access) matters just as much.
We do this calculation during the quote, then help you with the LogisVert rebate. Once the system is in, regular maintenance of filters and coils keeps every zone performing.

Frequently asked questions
Multi-zone heat pumps: your questions

How many rooms can a multi-zone heat pump serve?
It depends on the model and its capacity: the Gree Free Match M can feed up to 5 indoor units and the Stelpro Multi B up to 6. We choose the outdoor unit based on the number of zones and the capacity each room needs.
Can each room have its own temperature?
Yes. Each indoor unit has its own control: you set temperature, mode and fan speed room by room, and you can turn off an unused zone.
Does a multi-zone heat pump work in deep cold?
Our Gree Free Match M, Ouellet Myriad and Stelpro Multi B multi-zone systems keep heating down to −30 °C according to the manufacturers. Output drops in deep cold, so backup heat (baseboards, furnace) usually stays in place.
How much does an installed multi-zone heat pump cost?
The price depends on the number of zones, total capacity, line set length and access to the rooms. Answer a few questions and you’ll get a detailed installed price within 24 hours; we also check your eligibility for the LogisVert rebate.
